High altitude training
In Little Tibet for your mountain training
The positive effects of altitude on physical performance have been known to athletes and trainers for some time.
Training at high altitude has a positive effect on oxygen transport mechanisms, which is why sports training at high altitude is so popular.
The location of Hotel Spöl at 1816 m is particularly suitable as a starting point and location for high altitude training.
Dario, manager of Hotel Spöl and a passionate cyclist and triathlete, will be on hand to plan your stay in Livigno, because only those who practice these sports can truly understand the needs of an athlete.
HIGH ALTITUDE TRAINING FOR CYCLISTS, RUNNERS AND TRIATHLETES
For years, the protagonists of the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France have been meeting in Livigno for their preparation.
Pedalling through the streets of Livigno, you can be joined by the great cycling champions.
Runners, too, have a long footpath and numerous trails for running in peace surrounded by nature. In addition, thanks to the Aquagranda and its swimming pool, even professional triathletes and triathlon enthusiasts take advantage of the high altitude training in Livigno.
THE BENEFITS OF TRAINING AT HIGH ALTITUDE
During altitude training, the body reacts to situations of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) by developing natural adaptation solutions, which result in improved performance, both for professionals and amateurs.
THREE REASONS TO TRAIN AT HIGH ALTITUDE, PLUS ONE:
- The physique is stimulated to strengthen the muscles that act mainly in the respiratory/ventilatory function
- The lack of oxygen at high altitude forces the pulmonary alveoli to do extra work, a training that will facilitate respiratory function at low altitude. In this way, a trained athlete can naturally improve their performance
- The long stay at high altitude stimulates the human body to produce more red blood cells, thus better ability to supply oxygen to the cells
There is also a fourth, not purely scientific reason, and it is called living the life of a runner: training on highly stimulating routes, resting day and night at an ideal temperature, eating healthily and drinking pure water, and living far away from stress, constitute the greatest of the advantages of spending time at high altitude.
WHERE TO TRAIN IN THE MOUNTAINS
In order to enjoy the benefits of high altitude, so as to generate real adaptations in the body, it is advisable to stay at an altitude of at least 1,500 metres above sea level for about three weeks.
Thanks to the altitude between 1,816 and 2,700 metres, Livigno and its passes are ideal places for high altitude training for athletes and those who love running, cycling, mountain biking, triathlon and swimming.
At the end of your workout, you can relax in the wellness centre, recover your energy and release contractures with a sports massage. You will then regain the right form and balance before resuming your sporting activities.
